Key Details:

  • Trump's victory in Michigan's primary election marks his sixth consecutive win in delegate-awarding contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Michigan like Nevada earlier in the month, is holding both a primary and a caucus, with Michigan allocating 16 of the state's 55 delegates with its primary, and a remaining 39 allocated with a caucus on March 2nd.

  • Despite yet another landslide loss for Nikki Haley, the former governor has already doubled down on staying in the race after Saturday's home state loss in South Carolina.

Diving Deeper:

Trump's victory in Michigan's primary elections marks his sixth consecutive win following contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Despite facing continued opposition from former Governor Nikki Haley, Tuesday's win only adds to the former President's delegate haul and march towards the nomination.

On the Democratic side, 117 pledged delegates are up for grabs in Tuesday's contest. For Republicans, just 16 statewide at-large delegates will be won through the results of the primary election. Another 39 will be allocated at state party conventions Saturday. The 16 Republican statewide at-large delegates will be allocated in proportion to the primary results, with candidates needing to receive at least 12.5% of the vote to qualify for any delegates. The remaining 39 delegates will be allocated at 13 congressional district conventions on March 2.

Trump's victory in Michigan, a key battleground state, is expected to bolster his campaign heading into Super Tuesday next week, further solidifing Trump's position as the Republican front-runner, mirroring his significant lead in the polls.
